Billy O'Connor, the operator of Dingle Bay Speed Boat Tours & Blasket Island Landings, based in Dingle (office beside Dingle Tourism Office, facing statue of Fungie the dolphin), has performed a Herculean and praiseworthy task in renewing a number of old cottages in the ruins of the island village to create a very simple and basic, though comfortable, hostel. I took the opportunity not to just visit the Great Blasket Island on a day trip, but to stay for 4 nights at the very simple yet comfortable self-catering hostel on the island. ![]() I have been fascinated by the Blasket Islands for many years, after reading the amazing literary heritage left by a number of Islanders who lived their lives in the small village on the Great Blasket Island, until it was evacuated to the mainland in 1953/4. Just remember to bring a torch and non perishable food!! Enjoy! If you are going you should definitely stay overnight, the peace and quiet is fabulous. I can't wait to bring more of my friends here. I cannot say enough about all the people involved in the running of this adventure, they are very accomodating and have great knowledge about the wildlife and history of the island and other surrounding islands. Billy collected us the next afternoon to head back to Dingle, saw lots more dolphins on the way back inc. The beach seems to be home to a big seal colony and it's great fun to watch them. We walked the entire island, the views are brilliant the whole way around with lots of hares and rabbits bouncing around the place. The house is basic but has everything you need.a stove, gas cooking rings and beds! The house can be a bit drafty so bring jumper! There is a coffee shop next door and Geraldine who runs it is sound, very helpful and has great stories. Once you know that there is no electricity and come prepared then you will really enjoy the experience. Then Billy, the owner, dropped us on the Great Blasket Island where we stayed overnight in Peig Sayers house. Also saw lots of different pods of dolphins. We were lucky in that we had great weather so we were able to travel further out than usual. We first had a boat trip that took us our as far as inishvickillane where we saw puffins, seals and deer. Took a trip on the Peig Sayers and what an experience.
